Patent Pending | Designed and Engineered in New Zealand

Innovation doesn’t always mean adding complexity. Sometimes it means rethinking the smallest components, the ones that quietly cause the biggest frustrations.

Boon’s Smarter Sponge System

Boon’s Smarter Sponge System is a patent pending seed drill sponge and insert solution, purpose-designed to eliminate the mess, downtime, and cost associated with traditional glued-in sponge systems. Designed and engineered in New Zealand, it has been built specifically for real farming conditions.

The Problem with Traditional Seed Drill Sponges

Conventional seed drill sponge systems rely on glue and friction fit. In practice, this leads to ongoing issues for farmers and contractors, including:

  • Sponges breaking down from moisture and fertiliser exposure
  • Damage during removal due to glued-in inserts
  • Time-consuming replacement mid-season
  • Lost seed and calibration inconsistency
  • Rodent damage when machines are left outside or overnight

These problems aren’t theoretical, they happen in sheds and paddocks across New Zealand every season.

A Completely Re-Engineered Approach

Rather than modifying an outdated design, Boon developed an entirely new system from the ground up.

The Smarter Sponge System features:

  • A purpose-designed insert shape for strength and consistency
  • A secure screw-fit retention system
  • Slide-on, slide-off sponge replacement
  • No glue required, eliminating mess and part damage

This design allows sponges to be replaced quickly and cleanly, reducing downtime and extending component life.

Enclosed, Protected, and Locked Off

Boon’s sponge system is fully enclosed, helping protect sponges from two of their biggest enemies: rodents and moisture.

Key design features include:

  • A fully enclosed sponge cassette
  • Lock-out slide and calibration tray to isolate material flow when required
  • Reduced exposure to moisture compared to open sponge designs
  • Added protection against rodent damage when the drill is not in use

This enclosed approach improves reliability and helps maintain consistent performance throughout the season.

Flexible Material Management

The system is designed to work with the way farmers actually operate day to day.

Operators can:

  • Prime material off the sponges and leave it overnight
  • Lock the system off using the calibration tray
  • Remove the sponge cassette completely at the end of the day or season
  • Store the cassette safely in the shed, protecting sponges and metering components

This flexibility reduces waste, improves efficiency, and simplifies seasonal shutdown and storage.

Built for New Zealand Conditions

Every aspect of the Smarter Sponge System has been designed with New Zealand farming in mind:

  • Variable weather and moisture
  • Fertiliser use
  • Time pressure during drilling windows
  • Practical maintenance requirements

It’s a solution developed by people who understand farming — not just manufacturing.

Why It Matters

By removing glue, enclosing the system, and enabling fast, clean replacement, the Smarter Sponge System delivers:

  • Reduced downtime during peak drilling periods
  • Lower long-term replacement costs
  • Improved reliability and consistency
  • Easier maintenance and storage
  • A more farmer-friendly approach to seed drill design
